Major
The bright, resolved, "happy" sound that anchors most pop, folk and classical music.
Dorian
A minor scale with a hopeful lift, thanks to its raised sixth.
Phrygian
A dark, exotic minor with a tense half-step right above the root.
Lydian
A major scale that floats and dreams, thanks to its raised fourth.
Mixolydian
A major scale with a bluesy, dominant twist from its flat seventh.
Natural Minor
The classic sad, serious minor sound (also called Aeolian).
Locrian
The most unstable mode of all, restless and unresolved.
